WATCHING DULL EDGES
(the end of winter in the northern hemisphere
of a 23°27′ tilt)
series of 6 c-print photographs, 24 x 16 inches, 2017
This series of photographs documents a careful watching of the last snowfall of the winter melting inside a glass tube. The photographs were remade each time it snowed, until the snow had stopped for the season and the final version became the work. It is a mediation on what it means to be living through the end of planetary stability and predictable seasonal patterns as we (planetary creatures) have known them. It is about paying attention to losses that arrive slowly, aiming to both recognize and acknowledge them. Climate change sometimes arrives with thick, dull edges.
This work is part of an ongoing practice of paying attention as a first step towards mourning what has been lost due to climate change and finding different, more careful ways of living on this planet.
The artist gratefully acknowledges the Art Gallery of Ontario which supported the creation of this work for the Every.Now.Then exhibition
